Here at Circutor we have launched our new communication strategy accompanied by a complete revamp of our corporate identity.

CIRCUTOR’s new corporate identity was publicly launched on 1 April coinciding with the start of the Hannover Messe 2019 trade show, the world’s leading industrial fair.

The new corporate image was on display at the CIRCUTOR booth to show its new brand image in public for the first time.

It is a new corporate identity which is not designed to change who we are but rather seeks to draw attention to what makes us unique.

Spain ranks fifth for electric vehicle charging points

Electric cars are an increasingly frequent sight in our cities. Spain is now the fifth most prolific country in Europe for zero-emission vehicles.

FD 5pais VE cargadorWhen sales of these vehicles began to take off, there were not so many charging points as there are now. Spain now has 3,856 public charging points for electric cars.

It is thanks to those charging points that Spain has the fifth largest infrastructure globally for these vehicles. The data were collected by Unieléctrica, based on figures from electromaps.com and the Spanish Institute of Statistics.

The United States occupies first place for infrastructure, followed by France in second, Germany in third and Holland in fourth.

New users of electric cars are recommended to find out all possible information from institutions and to ask in dealerships. Primary, they must be sure before buying whether they can charge their vehicle adequately in their location. The availability of charging points varies across the country. For example, in the region of Catalonia there are 939 charging points, and in Madrid there are 453.

Eco-friendly cars are becoming more popular across the globe. Numerous Governments across the world are supporting sustainable mobility. What once seemed impossible is now a reality; many companies are pursuing eco-friendly transport, and the number of private charging points is on the rise.

How do I charge my electric car?

All you need to do is connect your car to a charging point. You can usually find the cable in the boot of your electric vehicle. Once it is connected, the charging programme will begin automatically. The LED lights will indicate when charging begins and some cars have a charging current programme.

For the optimum charging of the battery of your electric car, you should be aware of the two different types of plugs. Around 30 models of zero-emission vehicles on the market have a type 2 “Mennekes” plug, which has been EU standard since 2013, designed by the alternative electrical charging company Mennekes.

For a quick charge, the Japanese electrical and automotive industry developed for 2019 the CHAdeMo connector. It is mostly used in Asia, but certain European electric car models are now using this kind of plug.

If you have an adaptor you can also charge your electric car battery at home, but only in an emergency, because domestic electricity infrastructure is not suitable for extended charging.

How to avoid penalties on electricity bills (industry and services)

If you run a business, one of the things you will be concerned with is your electricity bill. You will no doubt have heard of reactive energy and how it can affect the cost of your final bill. But what exactly is this type of energy?

What is reactive energy?

So-called reactive energy is the electrical energy that certain electrical appliances and units take from and return to the grid without using it. This means it is not actual consumption, although there is a cost to utility companies as they have to generate and transport it, which is why this energy can be found on your bill, especially when it accounts for a high percentage of consumption.

This type of energy is mostly required by units that generate a magnetic field in order to work. While private properties may have practically no reactive energy consumption, for businesses it can be a significant expense and occasionally a source of problems.

There are steps you can take to lower the penalties imposed for the reactive energy required by the units you have installed, thus correcting the so-called power factor. This factor measures the ratio between active power (actual operating power) and the total power consumed or the apparent power. Its value will be 1 or less, representing the actual efficiency of the electricity consumption. The ideal power factor value is therefore 1, which would imply a better use of energy.

How to cut your electricity bill by reducing reactive energy

There are different measures that can be implemented to bring the power factor value as close as possible to 1. One of the options you will have to consider, if you haven't already, is installing a capacitor bank, consisting mainly of a regulator, contactors and capacitors.

The presence of harmonics in the facility must also be assessed, installing a harmonic filter whenever necessary. These elements are generated as a result of a distortion of the electrical current caused by certain electronic units. The problem is that the resonance they can generate ends up causing damage, such as overheating or system degradation.

In any case, a thorough study of the electrical facility would have to be carried out and any possible damage, especially to the capacitors, repaired. You should therefore consult an expert who can advise you on the best options for your facility.

Continuity in supply of raw materials and the constant flow of resources to production processes have been crucial in preventing financial losses due to production stoppages. As is well known, in both industry and business, time is money.

Production stoppages bring with them financial losses and in most cases they are down to lack of planning, whether due to a logistics issue, lack of preventive maintenance or many other similar problems. There are numerous obvious and visible causes and also others which are harder to identify.

Poor power supply quality is one of them; you cannot see it and its impact may be as serious as any lack of raw material for your production processes. The technology of the machinery involved in these processes is increasingly sophisticated and delicate while the quality of the voltage waveform is taken for granted in most designs.

Many maintenance managers are called in when a machine stops working properly or just comes to a halt for no apparent reason. From then on the experience of the manager and their team comes into play to spot the fault or to restart the system. It is likely that the system will resume operating without any further incidents, meaning the real problem remains unknown and may crop up again at any time with no apparent cause.

There’s no doubt you are getting swells, dips or interruptions in the power supply, and it may be that the electronic systems’ circuit breakers bring the machinery to a halt to prevent damage which can turn out to be very expensive.

Protecting your system against these kinds of problems may also call for significant investment, yet everything depends on how often you have these problems and the impact they have on your operations.

As we have seen, it is crucial to have real information about the status of the electricity network in order to be able to detect whether a production stoppage is due to the quality of the power supply. For this purpose, there are network analysers which can help maintenance managers to understand what is going on at any given time in order to make the best decision, either to avoid production stoppages or to mitigate their impact.

To try to make performing this task as easy as possible, Circutor has designed its CVM-A1500A power quality analyser. It will quickly report any network quality incidents which may occur in a facility so that action can be taken straightaway.

This model is certified under the IEC 61000-4-30 standard and detects faults in power supply quality in the waveform from the half cycle (from 10 ms in 50 Hz networks and 8.3 ms in 60 Hz networks), providing complete information to maintenance managers about the problem. By installing several units at key points in the installation you can get a clear idea of when, where and how a power supply quality problem has impacted it.

The CVM-A1500’s user interface and integrated Web server provide easy, convenient and intuitive access to information about any power quality problems identified.

You don’t have to be an expert to interpret its data

The downside when it comes to analysing network quality has always been the interpretation of data by a specialist engineer. Some installations have quality equipment installed but it is not used because users have difficulty in interpreting its data.

Quality analysers are normally “black boxes” which do not provide information if they are not connected via data interpretation software.

So in addition to needing computer skills to download their data you also have to know about their computer program for interpreting these data. If you additionally combine equipment from several manufacturers, then the task is even trickier.

That’s why Circutor has developed a model featuring browsing by colour screens to provide relevant information for decision making.

The CVM-A1500A analyser shows the ITIC (also CBEMA and SEMIF 47) curve on the screen. With just three clicks on the equipment, any maintenance manager can display the ITIC curve.

This curve shows red triangles each time an event occurs, quickly displaying how many quality events there have been and how damaging they have been for the installation. This means you can swiftly see what kind of problem you are faced with.

If the triangles are in the green zone, this means that there have been events (power surges or voltage drops) which have not harmed the electronic equipment in your facility. However, if the triangles are in the red zone, this will mean a swell which has most likely damaged your electronic equipment. The closer the triangles are to the top left, the more damaging they will be due to their high value and duration. By contrast, if the triangles are in the yellow zone this means that there have been voltage drops. These voltage drops may impact electronic systems leading to rebooting or stoppage due to low voltage.

Just by glancing at this screen, any maintenance manager will know why there might have been a malfunction. Furthermore, if it is repeated regularly, they will have more information to install a system which mitigates the event’s impact thus avoiding production stoppages and hence financial losses.

Installation events

In addition to the curves we have discussed above, the equipment has an event counter which shows you how many there have been in each phase so you will know whether the problem always comes from the same phase or if it is repeated regularly. To get a closer look, you can use the analyser’s screen to review each event individually and view it in detail. With several clicks on its screen you enter the event and see in which phase it took place, what its voltage percentage is, what voltage there was before the event (this helps you see whether it was a fast event due to switching or a slow one due to overloading), how long it lasted (from the half cycle) and on what date and at what time it occurred. Plus you can always enter the event to see its associated waveform, showing the voltage sinusoid to see exactly when it happened.

Other parameters to be checked to ensure the proper operation of an installation

We have seen how voltage events may bring about production stoppage which leads to financial loss. Furthermore, power supply quality analysers can help us avoid future problems in the installation by checking other relevant parameters.

Harmonics

Harmonic decompositionThese devices show harmonic decomposition up to 63, and you can see what level of harmonic load you have in the installation. Harmonics can impact the installation’s performance and also trip a circuit breaker or lead to overheating or malfunction of electronic loads.

Unbalances

Quite often installations have uneven currents in the various phases due to poor load distribution or a subsequent line extension. This effect may lead to current flowing through the neutral wire. In these cases it is essential to measure the current flowing through the neutral conductor to avoid possible insulation failures which can cause breakage that leads to swells, thus damaging components of the installation. Furthermore, if the installation has its own distribution transformer, this may overheat resulting in premature ageing and changing its useful life. To avoid these hazards, the CVM-A1500 network analyser measures neutral current along with any unbalance in voltages and currents and reports any situation that may entail a risk for the installation both onscreen and by email.

The CVM-A1500A analyser has a web server with built-in memory. Any user can access the logged data on a web browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome, etc.) to monitor all parameters in real time, produce graphs and tables, view quality events and waveforms and extract data easily in Excel without having to be an expert in power supply quality software. Plus the equipment can be integrated with our PowerStudio Energy Management Software (EMS) and can be integrated into a complete network with equipment for usage management to provide an overview of the installation’s entire status.

Network quality at a glance

As we have seen, with the CVM-A1500A power supply quality analyser any user can have complete control of the parameters which may bring about a malfunction in any installation and also check where an electrical fault comes from, whether it be internal or external. REC4. Comfort at home, continuity in infrastructures

Earth leakage protection is one of the most important systems in electrical installation safety.

Circuit breakers must always trip whenever a dangerous leakage level for humans is reached or they can cause economic losses to electrical installations. That said, these elements do not only trip on occasions caused by leakage in the installation, but due to external factors too, such as thunderstorms which frequently occur.

Self-reclosing RCCB devices are circuit-breakers with a built-in motor, whose function is to reclose if there is no permanent leakage in the installation.

This article presents a new design in Circutor's REC series, the REC4, as well as highlighting the benefits of installing such a device.

The device

The new REC4 is a development of its predecessor, REC3, in terms of size, while maintaining all its features. The device now takes up only a 3-module space, which means that it can be easily installed in new or existing electrical panels.

It is also the ideal solution for panels with limited space, replacing the standard earth leakage protection (2 modules) and the thermal magnetic circuit breaker (2 modules) with the REC4 (3 modules) and a unipolar thermal magnetic circuit breaker (1 module), also referred to as DPN. Automatic reclosing is therefore incorporated by taking up the same space, avoiding the need to enlarge the electrical panel.

The REC4 also includes the possibility to cancel the reclosing system by selecting manual or automatic mode, and may be sealed up to prevent tampering during maintenance work or once in operation.

Once installed, it has LED indicators to quickly, visually check its status (ON/triggered/reclosing) at all times.

To ensure full personal safety, the device is equipped with protective insulation, which deactivates the automatic reclosing system in the event of direct contact during handling, thus avoiding any injuries during start-up or maintenance work.

Its installation is really simple, since its compact size allows it to be fitted as a current circuit breaker, and the user does not need to make any type of connection between the circuit breaker and the motor, as it is completely built into its housing.

The REC4 is a device designed for all those installations where service continuity is essential. As you will notice, there are many possible uses for Circutor's self-reclosing RCCB device, which is suitable for any type of electrical installation thanks to its compact dimensions.

The REC4's functions make it particularly well-designed for domestic use, where most loads are single-phase. More and more devices operate autonomously and are controlled remotely. This is why RCCB tripping may cause several household problems.

This problem causes economic losses in having to get rid of food and make us waste time cleaning it and switching it on again.

Installations such as air conditioning, lighting, garden irrigation or pool maintenance are also remotely controlled nowadays by mobile devices. The device will help us to keep them working at all times, avoiding surprises on arriving home or at our second residence, the latter being possibly the most important case for our self-reclosing RCCB device.

However, the advantages are not just restricted to guaranteeing constant functioning of household appliances when we are away from home. There will be numerous occasions on which we will appreciate the REC4 self-reclosing device, e.g. when the lights suddenly go out at home, sparing us the discomfort of moving in the dark to the mains panel to flip the switch.

Continuity in infrastructures

The main reason to equip infrastructures with the REC4 circuit breaker is to maximise single-phase load service continuity. The device will reclose almost instantly as long as there is no permanent leakage, avoiding shutdowns in different systems that lead to substantial economic losses which must be avoided at all costs.

In the event of transient leakage tripping, the system will ensure that the installation continues to operate normally. On the other hand, if permanent leakage is really occurring, the system will try to reclose up to three times and if it the leakage persists, reclosing will not be completed, leaving the circuit open for a specialist to inspect it.

A downtime in this type of infrastructure could lead to losses of around €30,000/min for the company, in addition to the cost and inconvenience of displacing personnel to the site to simply flip the switch.

Other examples along these lines would be public lighting installations, guaranteeing that the lighting system works in the city or on the roads, or the reclosing of low-cost petrol station facilities that do not have personnel on site to manually carry out reclosing. Instead of moving to locations to restore normal operation, the REC4 would restore the installation's proper functioning.

There are several types of connectors for electric vehicle charging. In this article, we describe each of them, making special emphasis on Type 2 or Mennekes, which is the predominant in Europe.

It is commonly known as Mennekes, which is the name of the first brand that commercialized it. It is approved as a European standard.

As the electric car becomes more widespread, many brands are adapting to use it in European territory. However, a valid solution is to use a cable with two connectors. Thus, at one end, the appropriate connector is placed on the car's recharging socket and at the other end, the European connector.

It is an AC charger used in a variety of EV models, such as BMW i3i8BYD E6Tesla Model SRenault Zoe, plug-in hybrid Volvo V60VW E-upAudi A3 E-tron, plug-in Mercedes S500, hybrid Plug-in VW Golf, Porsche Panamera and Renault Kangoo ZE.

Type 2 connectors allow single-phase charging up to 16 A and three-phase charging up to 63 A, which translates to a power output of 3.5 kW and 44kW, respectively.

Its pin distribution is similar to Type 1, but in this case, two more pins are included, which correspond to the two additional phases necessary for three-phase charging.

Other types of connector to recharge the electric car

  • Schuko
    It is the usual plug you have at home or in the office. In addition to being in the vast majority of domestic applications, it is very common to find it on motorcycles and electric bicycles. It is also used in some electric cars, such as the Twizy.
  • Type 1 (SAE J1772)
    Type 1 (SAE J1772) This is the Japanese standard for electric vehicle charging in alternating current (also adopted by countries in North America and accepted by the EU). It is in models such as Opel AmperaNissan ENV200Nissan LeafMitsubishi iMievMitsubishi Outlander or Peugeot iON.
  • Type 3
    It was created in 2010, but it has lost the battle against the Type 2 model, and is currently in disuse.
  • CHʌdeMO
    CHʌdeMO It was developed by a Japanese association and is designed for rapid DC loads that can supply up to 50 kW of power with a current that can reach 125 A.
  • Combo 2 connector (IEC-62196-3)
    Combo 2 connector (IEC-62196-3) It offers the possibility of charging in modes 2, 3 and 4 through a single output. Vehicles from manufacturers like Audi, BMW, Porsche and Volkswagen incorporate it.

The device features a transistor output for interacting with the system once an alarm associated with an instantaneous parameter appears, fully programmable by the person in charge of maintenance.

The unit can be configured via the free software PowerStudio. This software also allows any wiring issues on the device to be resolved remotely, without having to wait to stop production, thus avoiding erroneous data in the readings.
  • It resolves current transformer installation errors
    If a current transformer has been installed incorrectly, the unit will provide incorrect measurements. Using the software, it is possible to rotate a transformer without having to physically modify the wiring, thus avoiding reading errors and any electrical risk, as it is not necessary to interact with the power system.
  • It resolves voltage and current correspondence errors
    If the voltage connections are not on the same line as the current transformers, the unit will show erroneous values in the cosφ and power factor measurement, resulting in an erroneous power and energy reading. Via the software, it is possible to change the position of the voltage phases so that they correspond to the current phases without having to physically modify the wiring, thus avoiding reading errors and any electrical risk, as it is not necessary to interact with the power system.
Increased safety
The new CVM-E3-MINI features a new Plug&ON system with plug-in terminals to facilitate the installation of the device. These terminals are totally protected by sealable terminal strip covers to avoid any tampering or accidental disconnection due to the voltage of the wiring itself.

The unit features an integrated Modbus RTU and BACnet protocol, providing versatility in terms of its installation in different types of installations, both in buildings and in industry settings. For those installations in which it is necessary to install the unit in panel format, the CVM-E3-MINI features a 72x72 mm adaptor for any assembly requirements.
